Useful Information for Alameda CA

Alameda, CA is unusual in that it is a charter city, meaning it can provide any form of government. It adapted a council-manager government in 1916, and continues to do so today. As was true of so many surrounding cities, Alameda started out as a Ranchero from a Spanish land grant. The city was originally founded in 1853 as three smaller settlements. Their first post office was opened in 1854, and the railroad followed in 1864.

One unique fact about Alameda not generally known is that an amusement park opened in 1917. Called Neptune Beach and a major attraction in the 1920's and 1930's, it was the origination of the snow cone, the Popsicle, and Kewpie Dolls given as prizes for games.

Neptune Beach was also home to two huge swimming pools, where Olympian Johnny Weismuller (perhaps the best know Tarzan in film) swam in swimming exhibitions. Although Neptune Beach shut down in 1939, a victim to the Great Depression, many of their inventions are still with us today.
