Useful Information for Castro Valley CA

Castro Valley, CA is not incorporated, and the 2000 census shows it the 5th most populous unincorporated area in California.

Europeans arrived in the area in 1797, and the Castro Valley of today was originally part of the land grant for Mission San Jose. Originally named after the Mexican army soldier and rancher Don Guillermo Castro, his gambling problems led to the selling off of his lands to satisfy his debts. The last lot was sold by a sheriff's sale in 1864.

The area was known during the 1940's and 1950's for its chicken ranches, and later developed into a bedroom community for surrounding areas. Since Castro Valley is unincorporated, it is governed by Alameda County. The town has its' own fire and school district, but the residents remain opposed to any incorporation vote.
