Useful Information for Folsom CA

Folsom CA is located near the capital city of Sacramento, and because of the Johnny Cash song, "Folsom Prison Blues", is most widely known for it's prison. Folsom was named in honor of founding father Joseph Folsom, the lobbyist who convinced the railroad to build tracks into the city. The gold rush in the mid 1850's brought prospectors, immigrants and Chinese laborers to populate the town.

The town's most famous facility, Folsom Prison, started in 1880 with the donation of land from the Livermore family in exchange for free prison labor. The Livermore's were also responsible for the building of Folsom Powerhouse, whose purpose was to bring electricity into the area.

The building of Folsom Dam in 1956 helped provide flood control and water necessary for agriculture. The dam also created one of the most popular lakes in the area, named Folsom Lake, of course.
