Useful Information for Fremont CA

Fremont, CA was incorporated as a city in 1956, and named after John Charles Fremont, frequently referred to as The Great Pathfinder for his many explorations and discoveries. The history for Fremont began with the founding of Mission San Jose in 1797. John C Fremont visited the area in 1846, and mapped the trail that led American settlers into the area.

The California gold rush in the 1850's led to the rapid growth of the area, with agriculture marking the center of its' economic growth. The Niles section of the railroad brought even more people to the area. In the early 1900's, the Niles area was home to the earliest California motion picture industry, and one of the most famous examples, the Tramp with Charlie Chaplin, was filmed here.

Fremont is now the 4th largest population center for the San Francisco Bay area, and the largest city close to Silicon Valley. A true melting pot of diversity, Fremont has sister cities in Australia, the Azores, India, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines and Portugal.
