Useful Information for Hollister CA

Hollister CA is both a city located within the county of San Benito, and the county seat. Primarily an agricultural town, Hollister was founded on November 19, 1868. Tired of towns named after Saints or Spaniards, local vintner Henry Hagen recommended an earlier property owner for the honor and the name Hollister was picked.

Incorporated in 1872, Hollister was originally part of Monterey County, but separated from them in 1874. Hollister is one of three California towns that claims the title Earthquake Capital of the World, the other two being Parkfield and Coalinga. It is also famous among geologists for being one of the best examples of "aseismic creep" found anywhere in the world. This has led to distortions among local housing that is visible to the naked eye.

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused significant damage to the city, not surprising due to its proximity to the San Andreas Fault.
