Useful Information for Santa Fe NM

Santa Fe, NM is the capital of the state, and also has the distinction of being the oldest capital city of all 50 states. Spanish for “holy faith”, Santa Fe was originally established by members of the Pueblo Indians, and dates back to the 1100's. Spain claimed the area in 1598 as a territory of New Spain. The city remained under Spanish rule except for the brief period of 1680–1692 when the native Pueblo Indians reclaimed their territory. Their occupation was short lived however, and the city returned to Spanish rule. Admitted as a state in the year 1912, Santa Fe became the official capital.

During the 2nd World War, the city served an internment camp for the Japanese, later adding prisoners from Germany and Italy. Santa Fe today is an urban area featuring pueblo style buildings that are stuccoed with flat roofs. One claim to fame is the city is home to two famous musicians, Kenny Rogers and Randy Travis.
