Useful Information for Stockton CA

Stockton, CA is a city in northern San Joaquin Valley and is the county seat. It is also the fourth largest city in the state's Central Valley. Blessed with a typical Mediterranean climate, most of Stockton's history has revolved around farmland and agriculture. This changed with the discovery of gold in California during the 1850's.

Many California cities were hit hard during the housing value downturn of the last decade, and Stockton was no exception. The city was faced with an economic disaster that led to them becoming the largest US city to declare bankruptcy, until that distinction was later claimed by Detroit. The laying off of police officers was followed by an increase in crime. Stockton was soon being referred to in the nations press as one of the highest crime rating nationwide, as well as a high illiteracy ranking.

But all is not bleak for this California city. It is home to the annual Asparagus Festival, and city voters have recently passed legislation to raise sales tax to help reverse their economic woes. The business section has diversified to include both the telecommunication industries as well as manufacturing companies.

It is also home to the Haggin Museum that was built in Victory Park in 1931. It is famous for the art displayed there which includes work from the 19th and 20th century, as well as local historic exhibits.

The location the city enjoys, near both Sacramento and San Francisco, is an added plus. With so much going for it, Stockton is working hard to improve the future for the city and its residents.
